WHAT IS LAND POLLUTION?

The presence of unwanted materials, radioactive materials and toxic chemicals (pollutants or contaminants) on the surface of the soil, in high concentrations is called SOIL POLLUTION OR LAND POLLUTION. As a result, the soil loses its structure and chemical and biological properties. Hence, the biological factors such as microorganisms, plants and animals cannot survive on the earth.

Some of the common soil pollutants are hydrocarbons, heavy metals (e.g. cadmium, lead, chromium, copper, zinc, mercury and arsenic), herbicides, pesticides, oils, tars, Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) and dioxins.
