Advisory committee, constituted for ENVIS Node
on "Microorganisms and Environment Management"
in the Department of Zoology, University of Madras
was held first meeting on 10th June 2004 at 11.30
A.M. in the Syndicate Hall, under the chairmanship
of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof.S.P.Thyagarajan.
The meeting was attended by the Experts and a
representative from the Ministry of Environment
& Forests, Govt. of India by Dr.Bhomik, Additional
Director.
Participants of the National
workshop on Zooplankton visited to our ENVIS Node
and explained the objectives, services and functions
of the node. They are highly impressed with our
activities and facilities available in the ENVIS
Node.
Prof. Shin-ichi Uye,
Biological Oceanography, Hiroshima University,
Japan has visited selected South Indian Universities
and Research Institutions under the INSA-JSPS
(Indian National Science Academy - Japanese Society
for Promotion of Science) Exchange of Scientists
Programme between 15th August 2004 and 3rd September
2004. He was invited by Prof. N. Munuswamy
and Prof.T.Subramoniam (Host Scientists),
Department of Zoology, University of Madras and
he was honored by our Vice-Chancellor
Prof.S.P.Thyagarajan. He delivered a
lecture on "Coastal eutrophication/pollution
and associated changes in the plankton community"
under UGC-COSIST & DST-FIST sponsored programme
in the Department of Zoology at Chemical Sciences
Auditorium on August 19th 2004 at 11.30 A.M. Prof.
M. Arumugam, Head, Department of Zoology
welcomed the gathering and introduced Prof. Uye
to the audience. Later, Prof. Uye visited the
ENVIS Node and appreciated the objectives, activities
and dissemination of environment related information
to the benefit of national as well as global scientific
community through on-line. He is highly impressed
the efforts put forth by the ENVIS team for the
creation of awareness of environment management
and conservation. Besides, he also visited other
Universities and Institutions and delivered interesting
and popular lectures on biological and ecological
aspects of the Japanese marine medusae (Jellyfish
blooms) as well as on coastal eutrophication and
management to the benefit of students, research
scholars and scientists.
Environmental Information System (ENVIS) provides national and international
environmental information in the disciplines of pollution control,microorganisms,envis,
toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology, environmentally sound and appropriate
technology, bio-degradation of wastes and environment management.
