About our New Vice Chancellor
Prof. S.P. Thyagarajan has been our New Vice Chancellor. He is a D.Sc., in Microbiology in addition to his Ph.D. and M.D. Degrees. He has also been conferred with several Fellowship titles including those by National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medical Sciences. He has put in 34 years of UG/PG teaching and research experience in Tamilnadu Medical Colleges and in University of Madras. He has till date completed 50 research projects funded by national and inter-national funding agencies and mobilized grants over Rs.35.0 crores to the University of Madras. He has published 283 research papers and 16 books in the area of infectious diseases especially hepatitis, STDs and HIV/ AIDS.
He is member of expert committees of UGC, ICMR, DBT, DOD, Ministry of Health, WHO etc., He has guided 69 students for research and 24 candidates have been awarded Ph.D. under his supervision
He had conducted international collaborative research projects with scientists from 25 countries including USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan etc., with mutual visits to these countries. His research contributions have been recognized by 19 international and national awards. The awards of excellence include the Consultant Epidemiologist award of Glasgow University, UK; ICMR award in Virology and Kamal Kumari National award in Science and Technology
He is the inventor of a drug for the treatment of chronic jaundice, called Hepatitis-B from the Indian medicinal plant, Phyllanthus amarus, [Kizhanelli in Tamil]. He has also secured national/ international patent for this discovery on the name of University of Madras and the patents have already been awarded in USA, South Africa and North Korea. The drug has already been marketed by an University-Industry agreement under the brand name "VIROHEP" by Rallis India Pharmaceuticals/ Shreya Life Sciences, Mumbai, bringing financial benefits to the' University
Prof. Thyagarajan has served the Madras University also in several administrative positions as Director, Dr. A.L. Mudaliar Post-Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Taramani; Founder Director of the University-Industry Interaction Centre; Dean [Industrial Consultancy]; Registrar in-charge and as Special Officer [Development Programmes]. As Co- ordinator, he facilitated the FIVE STAR level accreditation to the University of Madras by NAAC in 1999 and also secured the award of status of "University with Potential for Excellence" with a grant of Rs.30.0 crores by UGC in the year, 2001
Association of Microbiologist of India (Chennai Unit)
Association of Microbiologist of India (Chennai Unit) has organized a meeting on 13th October 2003 to honor its member Prof. S.P.Thyagarajan who has been appointed as a Vice Chancellor, University of Madras.
Prof. Usha Anand Rao, President AMI (Chennai Chapter) welcome the gathering and briefed the Vice Chancellor's achievements, important findings and research endeavors. On this occasion, Prof. S.P.Thyagarajan gave a lecture on "Microbiology and Interdisciplinary Research". He highlighted the importance of microbiological research and their application in science, industry, etc. Many microbiologists, researchers, and students participated in the function. Prof. J. Muthumary, Secretary, AMI (Chennai Chapter) proposed vote of thanks.
Association of Microbiologist of India (Chennai Unit)
Association of Microbiologist of India (Chennai Unit) has organising series of lecturer programs to the benefit of microbiologists, students and environmentalists. Under this, Dr.S.Sreenivasaprasad, Research Leader and Project Co-ordinator, Wellesbourne, UK gave a lecture on "Molecular and Biotechnological approaches to understanding fungal development and diversity" on 9th December 2003 at University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai. AMI members, microbiologists from various organizations and students attended the lecture.
