       A fibrous web that includes a cationic polymer that contains a cationic monomer comprising a cationic functional group having an affinity for the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria and a hydrophobic monomer comprising a hydrophobic functional group is provided. The molar ratio of the cationic monomer to the hydrophobic monomer is greater than about 1:1. The affinity of the cationic polymer for the bacteria allows the web to capture bacteria, thereby removing them from a surface or liquid, without the use of harsh chemicals, and also inhibiting their spread to other surfaces and liquids that may contact the web.

       A system and method for removal of phosphates from a closed loop estuarine or marine recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), involving denitrification in the presence of a media substrate for: 1) anaerobic nitrate, nitrite and ammonia removal and 2) sequestering of excess phosphate in the RAS.        An apparatus and method for mixing/agitating microorganism culture bottles includes a wheel in which culture bottles are placed, with the wheel being set at an angle from vertical so that bottles are not inverted during rotation. A sensor such as a florescence or colorimetric sensor for carbon dioxide is disposed along the flat bottom surface of each of the bottles. Once during each revolution the bottles pass across a photodiode/light emitting diode pair (for a calorimetric system). A sensor transmits light emitted by the LED to the photodiode. At the same instant, an infrared reflective objective sensor, emitting on a digital rotary encoder, determines the bottle number. The change in sensor transmittance is directly related to cell growth so that bottles positive for growth can be detected by suitable software.

Next the specific nutrient formulation is applied to stimulate some of the resident microorganisms to interact with oil contained in the reservoir rock formations.        An instrument, method, use and software program to obtain information rapidly about microorganisms that may spread uncontrolled in hospitals, water supply, food or when used in bio terrorism are described. Vibrational spectroscopy provides data to a computer linked to one or more databases. Comparison of the spectral data and information retrieved from the databases is used to identify and classify the microorganisms, applying suitable algorithms, which algorithms are self-generating and self-adapting to new spectroscopic data.        The invention provides method for producing butanediol and specifically 2,3-butanediol by anaerobic fermentation of a gaseous substrate comprising CO by a culture of at least one micro-organism. A mutation is introduced into the active site of glutamine-dependent catalysis in 5'-XMP aminase.
