A team of researchers introduced a new way to use microbes to remove salt from water with a wide range of salinitiesincluding sea water by desalination method without high energy input. Currently, desalination relies on either reverse osmosis or electrodialysis both needs high cost and large amount of energy. The device known as microbial desalination cell (MDC), a modified microbial fuel cell (MFC) which use bacteria to remove 90% of the salt from water additionally generate electricity and cleans waste water.
