Dr.S.Vincent
an Environmental Scientist and Reader
in the Department of Zoology, Loyola College,
Chennai has been appointed as Member Secretary
for Tamilnadu State Council for Science
& Technology. He will maintain liaison
between Government of India and the State
Government and co-ordinate research activities
of Government Departments, Universities,
Colleges and other Professional Bodies
with a view to develop cutting edge of
scientific research in the state.
Dr. S. Vincent is an
active researcher in the field of environmental
science and wildlife conservation. Based
upon his expertise and dedicated service
in the environment management and conservation,
he has been awarded 'Environmental Awareness
and Education Award (2000) by the Department
of Environment, Government of Tamilnadu
and 'Young Scientist' (1998) by the Tamilnadu
State Council for Science and Technology,
Government of Tamilnadu.
He is also a member
in Storm Water Drain Management for Chennai
and Co-ordinator for clean and Green street
in Chennai, by Department of Environment,
Government of Tamilnadu.

Established a New Centre for Ocean and Coastal Studies (COCS)

University
of Madras has established a Centre
for Ocean and Coastal Studies (COCS)
with a foresight of developing multi disciplinary
facilities for carrying out Research and Development
(R&D) and human resources development programmes
in the areas of coastal and ocean science. The
interaction between land and sea with particular
reference to climate changes, ecosystem modifications
in the east coast of India will receive special
attention. The main objective of the Centre is
to facilitate inter-disciplinary teaching, training
and R&D programs with an aim to protect, conserve
and manage the ocean and marine ecosystems for
sustainable development towards optimum utilization
of resources for the benefit of community. The
Centre extends invitation to scientists/academicians
to work together for the building of Ocean Science
Partnership through sharing of knowledge, improved
communications and enhanced collaboration on mutual
